The Social Security Disability Benefits Application Process

In general, the following four elements are involved in applying for Social Security Disability benefits:

  • Qualifying Medical Exam: Social Security may ask you to be examined by a doctor who works for the Social Security Administration. You should contact our office to discuss what you should be aware of in such an exam.
  • Medical History: You must submit information and documentation regarding your medical history and disability. The medical information you provide should include your complete medical history, a listing of any conditions you suffer from, and any diagnoses related to your disability and medical condition.
  • Work History: In order to determine what kind of work you might be capable of performing given your current medical condition, you must submit a work history to the Social Security Administration. If, due to your work history and education, you are only qualified for jobs you cannot perform due to your condition, the SSA will review your application and make its decision accordingly.
  • Education: The Social Security Administration is interested in determining if your educational level has prepared you for a line of work you aren’t currently engaged in but are able to perform. If you suffer from a physical disability, your education may qualify you for work that doesn’t require physical exertion or activity. The law requires SSA to take all of these factors into consideration when evaluating your disability benefits application.
